Good Morning, Good Night

Unless you live somewhere outside if the Twitter-sphere, you’re likely familiar with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s morning and evening tweets. They’re sometimes humorous, always heart-felt, and they’re uplifting (which, on the internet is never a given).

At 140 characters or less, these messages are, in a lot of ways, a study in micro-poetry. They’re concise, which means they dispense with the fluff and pack a punch. Each day starts off with a “Good Morning” tweet, paired with a “Good Night” tweet sometime in the evening. Often the theme of the tweets is related, and they offer a short moment of reflection before beginning or ending the day.

Recently, Miranda paired up with Jonny Sun to illustrate these “little pep talks” and together they published G’Morning, G’Night. If you follow the G’Morning & G’Night tweets, it is hard to imagine that anything could make them more charming, but here comes the Sun, and that’s exactly what he does. It feels reminiscent of Shel Silverstein in the oversized-sketchy style he uses, but it fits perfectly with the theme of the book and the tweets themselves.

This book would make a terrific gift of stocking stuffer for just about anyone whom you like. Even if you don’t like someone, this is probably still a great gift, because reading these morning and evening messages would undoubtedly make them a more bearable person to be around.

This is one of those books that you can sit and read all the way through, thumb through at random, or pick up when you need a little pick-me-up. Really, I love everything about it.
