Back to the Future

Is there anyone who doesn’t love the story of Marty McFly and Doc? Browsing the children’s section of the bookstore lately, I couldn’t leave without this illustrated version of Back to the Future.

Most of us are familiar with the 1985 sci-fi classic film; I remember more than a couple of weekends spent with friends and popcorn and the DeLorean. This book had all of the nostalgia of watching the movies again with fresh charm for a younger audience.

Our story opens, to no surprise, with Marty and his family in “present-day” Hill Valley. After introducing us to his family and to Doc, McFly finds himself in the DeLorean and in the the year 1955. He meets his dad, George, bully Biff, and other “adults” he knew in the future.

Realizing that his parent’s romance would never get off of the ground without his help, Marty pulls strings to make sure they get and stay together. At the same time, 1955-Doc is preparing to get Marty back to 1985.

Kim Smith does a phenomenal job of making this 80’s film feel new and fresh without losing any of the classic feel of the original. I love this book as a fun way to introduce this timeless (see what I did there?) story to a younger generation. There is nothing quite like rediscovering characters like Marty, George, Doc, and the DeLorean.

This is a fantastic book for an older generation who loves Back to the Future or a younger crowd who has no cultural context for the book. You really can’t go wrong, no matter who you’re buying this for, including yourself. This is one you’ll want to read at bedtime, story time, 1985, 1955, 2021, and any time in between.
